Smooth Sailing Sports Togs- A Pattern Review
Pictured here is a 1940's (or late 1930's) outfit that I sewed up using the Wearing History Smooth Sailing Sport Togs Shirt and Trousers pattern. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! This pattern is great. The blouse needs a little work in the armhole, but otherwise, I have no corrections.
This pattern is available in paper form or as a digitally downloadable file. I chose the downloadable file because it was less expensive and I would get it delivered right away. The later being more important. That's funny, actually, because I did not end up sewing it right away. Ha! assembling the pages to create the pattern was clearly explained and took me about 45 minutes to complete (both top and pants).
The pattern came in 2 size options, when I purchased it a couple of months ago, but it looks like, now, it comes with all sizes included. I chose the bust 36" size for the blouse and the waist 32" size for the trousers. I measured the patterns to make sure they would fit my body measurements and it was a good match. Note, the finished waist on the trousers is actually 32" so it fits me nicely and my body measures 31" at the waist.
The Top - Fit is pretty good, overall. I reduced the shoulder width 1" on the front and back yoke. for the next one, I'll reduce it again, maybe an additional 1/4" on each side and also, scoop out the armhole on both front and back bodice. While wearing the blouse, I can feel the armhole cutting into my body. It sounds dramatic, but it's not really; I can just feel it. This causes the sleeve to be a little flat and makes it stick out a bit looking extra poofy. I think reshaping the armhole on the bodice/yoke will help the sleeve sit closer to my body rather than out at the sides, and give it a more 3 dimensional feel and make the sleeve seem less poofy.
The Trousers - Fit is excellent and I wouldn't change a thing. Even the length works for me. The pattern is constructed so that the leg is basically straight from the knee down so it makes it very easy to hem and there is enough length to create a cuff, alternately. I'm 5' 4" tall and ended up with 1 3/4" finished cuff. These are probably the most flattering trousers I own and now I want them in every color. The only downside is that they don't have pockets. I think I'll have to add those to my next pair that are likely to be made from denim.
Until next time, happy Sewing!
