Journey to Filoli - Part 2 - The Grounds
Welcome to Part 2 in my Journey to Filoli - Doesn't that sound like the start of a public television announcement? It really was such hot day, all I really wanted to do was jump in that amazing pool, built in the 1930's at the estate.
Because of the heat, we did not get to see the entire 16 acres of formal gardens but we did venture around as much as we could. It really was all I could do, not to jump in that pool.
The views and paths through the garden were very inviting. One could wander endlessly down a path between hedges, only to look to the side and see some another avenue for exploration. I was happy to venture into this conservatory. It was shaded, cool and very sweet with lots of blooming tropical plants inside.
The knot garden was especially pretty. If seen from above, the plants form a Celtic Knot design. They had a miniature version available to show you how it would look on a smaller scale. The plants were in full bloom, however, so both versions were so lush that it was hard to make out and definitely difficult to photograph.
I just adored watching Emma walk through this part of the grounds. Everything was more formal and manicured. Plants carefully placed. Very much like my little Virgo in every way.
If you get the Chance to visit Filoli House and Garden, I would recommend the Spring or Fall or even during the Holiday Season. Their website seems to be having trouble so I would advise giving them a call to find out more information. You can reach them at (650) 364-8300
