Pattern Review - Wearing History 1930's Day or Evening Blouse Pattern
Straight from the Unfinished Objects post and over the Finish Line! This little Summer Staple has hit my closet. Boy, am I excited, because it’s HOT right now. Let’s jump right into the pattern review.
In my outfit I’m wearing a blouse I made with embroidered Cotton lawn using the 1930’s Day or Evening Blouse pattern from Wearing History. My Trousers are also made from a Wearing History pattern - the Smooth Sailing Sport Togs. I have been wearing these now for several years and I LOVE them.
On to the blouse - This blouse features a faced lapel, front yoke seam with gathers over bust, short fitted puff sleeve along with a button and loop front closure with fitted waistline & peplum. These sweet little details are what gives it a quintessential 1930’s look.
The pattern came together well and instructions were pretty good. there are different options for front openings and I chose the button and loop closure. I never shy away from a challenge when it comes to pulling tiny tubes right side out. Well it actually starts as one long skinny tube which is made from a long strip of 1” wide bias lawn. After folding the sides together and stitching along the long side 1/4” from the edge, a loop turner/bodkin is used to turn that long spaghetti piece right side out. Then it’s cut into equal segments and placed along the front seam, with the ends side by side, to create the loops.
It’s not really that hard, just challenging to the novice. The most important thing is to use small stitches and sew precisely the same distance from the edge all the way down the tube.
I sewed up the size 38, which turned out to be a tad bit large. I think if I make this shirt again, I will either try the 36 or go between sizes for a slightly more fitted look, & shorten the bodice about 1/2” as I’m a bit short waisted. Otherwise, the fit, is very nice. I really love the sleeves. Puff sleeves are growing on me. They always seemed a bit extreme, but as I get more into the 1930’s I really love them, even when the puff is at my shoulder.
