The fashion world is constantly cycling through trends, so it’s no wonder why so many vintage styles have been popping up in recent years. Sunglasses are no exception; many models from decades past have popped up today, albeit with more modern twists on these classic looks. These sunglasses trends have taken over the top names in fashion too; singer Billie Eilish recently modeled for a vintage-inspired Gucci eyewear campaign that gave a nod to film noir. Though all kinds of retro shades from various eras in fashion have gained popularity in the modern age, here are some top vintage sunglasses trends that are making a comeback:
Oversized sunglasses
Though many sunglasses trends have been skewing towards the skinnier side, oversized sunglasses reminiscent of the 1960s and ‘70s styles have made a huge comeback in recent years. Audrey Hepburn’s timeless look in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s gave this style a glamorous vibe, allowing the trend to keep coming back throughout the years. These oversized shades come in many different styles, from thick round frames to daintier wire-rimmed styles, and warmer colors call back to the earthy and warm hues of the ‘70s. Top brands have been hopping on the versatility of these sunnies. Fendi sunglasses showcase how oversized frames can be stylish in various designs. Models like the cat-eye style FE40011U and the rounder and thicker FE40048U both take the oversized trend in different directions but still provide a classic chic look.
Tortoiseshell
Tortoiseshell frames have a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. In the 1920s, they were must-have luxury items worn by those in the upper echelons of society and made from real turtles and large tortoises. Though the use of real tortoiseshells for sunglasses has long been banned, they’ve often come back in style throughout the years. The 1980s saw a resurgence of their popularity, especially now that they were made with acetate substitutes instead of real tortoiseshells. Today, it’s a great way to get a stylish vintage look but with a modern edge since the pattern can be used in all kinds of styles. If you want to stick to a timeless vibe, you can take inspiration from author Joan Didion’s iconic Celine faux tortoiseshells, which were sold for a whopping $27,000 in an auction.
Small round frames
Icons like John Lennon may have popularized the small and round sunglasses trend in the ‘70s, but they were also a classic style in the 1930s. It was an exciting time for innovation and experimentation. There was a huge trend in white and clear frames thanks to new inventions in plastic, and various lens colors like blue, green, smoke, and others became widely popular. Since then, the trend of small round sunglasses has evolved and has gone in and out of fashion, but they’ve now become a classic retro style. They’re simple and easy to pair with various looks and provide a lot of ways to have fun with different lens colors or frame patterns. They’re a perfect fit for everyday looks or even for a fun 1930s event. Check out the fun ‘30s vintage shades on guests at the Gatsby Summer Afternoon.
Though these sunglasses styles may be considered vintage, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll go out of style. Trends will keep coming back to suit a modern audience, taking popular styles from today and combining them with the timelessness of a vintage piece.
