I can’t say enough good things about our recent Bra Making class at The Sewing Room. Linda Sepeda was a fantastic instructor and she really helped us to get the best fit possible. We had 3 students including myself. Two of us are pattern makers and all of us had a lifetime of sewing experience, so we had a bit of an advantage and finished our first bra in the first class day. Apparently this doesn’t really happen very often (or at all).
Having Linda’s expertise, every step of the way was invaluable. I do not think I could have done this on my own, as she knew all the steps and tricks to make the bras look super professional. That being said, any advanced beginner could really benefit from this class, as the actual steps were not that hard AND Linda is there for every step of the process. We were just a bit faster because of our experience.
We started with the Pin-Up Girls Classic Bra Pattern. Linda fit us beforehand to get the right size. She did have to make some adjustments to each of our patterns, as none of us opted for her special “custom fitting”. I highly recommend doing the custom fitting. She really makes sure you are getting the right bra size and will even make adjustments to the pattern, for your particular body shape. It’s hard to go by just measurements alone, and in the custom fit, she does make sure you are wearing the right cup size by having you try on her sample bras (she has 22 of them!).
We got our pattern pieces cut out of the fabric. We all started with the Beige as it is closest to nude for most skin tones.
Seeing the pieces barely put together, it’s hard to see that it’s going to turn into the bra it becomes. But it really works!
We got all sorts of sewing technique instruction. And using the right materials really makes a difference. Linda has a great supply to choose from and we DID get to choose some alternative options for day 2.
Here is my first finished bra, inside and out. It’s pretty old fashioned looking, but fit almost perfect. Because I’m super LUCKY, Linda made some pattern adjustments for me and my second bra fit even better and was prettier because I used antique lace along the top cup.
Tamara’s second bra was a Super Success, don’t you think? She expressed a love of colorful undergarments and Linda brought, the Pink Findings, Pink & Black lace and striped Duoflext (main bra fabric) to our second class. It turned out so pretty and Tamara was thrilled!
Here I am wearing my finished bra. I love it so much and have been wearing it most days as it gives me the shape and support I need. I can’t wait to make my next bra!!!! It’s so much fun!!
We’ll be running the Bra Class + Panty + Bralette class, again in the New Year. Send me a email (Jennifer@TheSewingRoomAlameda.com) if you would like to be put on the list for the class announcement. I really think this could be one of the best ways to get the bras you want at a reasonable price. And it’s totally fun as well.
You can find out more about Linda Sepeda on her Website. She’s in Canada taking another Bra Course right now, so she’ll be even more filled with Bra Skills when she returns.
Until Next time, Happy Sewing!
